Taking full advantage of playing on home soil, Olga Kulikova and Valeria Shcherbatykh were the players to cause the surprises as play began in the qualification stage of the Women’s Singles event at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Airports of Regions Russian Open in Ekaterinburg on the morning of Wednesday 5th November. No World ranking, 21 year old Olga Kulikova accounted for Korea’s Lee Eunhye, named at no.161 on the global list. Meanwhile, Valeria Shcherbatykh, after losing to Lee Eunhye’s colleague, Lee Yeram (11-6, 11-7, 11-6, 18-16) recovered to cause an upset by defeating Poland’s Katarzyna Grzybowska (13-11, 11-9, 7-11, 5-11, 7-11, 15-13, 12-10). Currently Lee Yeram is named at no.239 on the Women’s World Rankings whilst Katarzyna Grzybowska is at an impressive no.65. Conversely, Valeria Shcherbatykh, who will celebrate her 16th birthday later this year on Christmas Day, is named at no.363 on the Women’s World Rankings. Looked for Video “I was tried to find some video of my competitor on internet but failed”, said Olga Kulikova. “During first game I had problem with her forehand, so I changed the direction of my attack to her forehand; also she had some problems with my services.” Increasingly Familiar on ITTF Junior Circuit Minimal international experience, it was a fine performance from Olga Kulikova as it was from Valeria Shcherbatykh who has become a familiar face at ITTF Junior Circuit tournaments in Europe this year. "I was prepared for the match and watched all the latest matches of my rival; Katarzyna Grzybowska has a strong forehand but she served long and I was able to take the initiative", explained Valeria Shcherbatykh.
